Apple Releases iOS 27 With Siri AI in Beta, Running Partly on Google's Cloud and Gemini Models

Apple Releases iOS 27 With Siri AI in Beta, Running Partly on Google's Cloud and Gemini Models
Apple shipped iOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate and related updates today, September 14, 2026, headlined by a rebuilt Siri AI assistant that's still in beta and requires a waitlist. The assistant leans on Apple's own models plus Google Cloud infrastructure and Gemini-assisted development, and it won't work in the EU or China at launch.

Apple released iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate, watchOS 27, tvOS 27 and visionOS 27 today, Monday, September 14, 2026. The headline feature across every platform except tvOS is Siri AI, a large-language-model overhaul of Apple's voice assistant that Apple first showed off back in June and had delayed from an original 2024 announcement.

Siri AI is not fully baked yet. According to CNBC, the new assistant ships as a beta that users must opt into through Settings, and some may land on a waitlist before getting access. It works in English only at launch. Apple says French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish support is coming in October, though it hasn't given an exact date, according to NetNewsLedger.

What Siri AI actually does

The new assistant can search a user's messages, emails, photos and calendar for personal context, read what's on screen, and take actions inside apps that support it, per Apple's own release notes. A new dedicated Siri app syncs conversation history across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Vision Pro through iCloud. A Camera app "Siri mode" can split a restaurant bill and pay through Apple Cash, and "Write with Siri" drafts or edits text in Mail, Messages and other apps, adapting to a user's usual phrasing, according to MacRumors.

The Google connection

Apple's on-device models are labeled AFM 3: a 3-billion-parameter AFM 3 Core and a 20-billion-parameter AFM 3 Core Advanced that uses a sparse architecture activating only 1 to 4 billion parameters per request, according to Ars Technica. For heavier requests, Apple routes queries to its Private Cloud Compute servers, which CNBC reports run on Google Cloud infrastructure using Nvidia and Intel chips. CNBC and NetNewsLedger both report Apple built its underlying Foundation Models in collaboration with Google's Gemini team, a notable dependency for a company that has spent years marketing itself as the privacy-first alternative to Silicon Valley's ad-driven giants.

Apple maintains that personal data sent to Private Cloud Compute isn't stored or made accessible to Apple itself. That's Apple's claim, not an independently audited finding, and none of the available reporting cites outside verification of it.

Locked out in the EU and China

Siri AI and related Apple Intelligence features won't work in the European Union or China at launch. Apple says it's "working hard to find a path forward that preserves its users' privacy and security" in the EU and is navigating unspecified regulatory requirements in China, according to Engadget. A reasonable defender of EU digital rules would argue the bloc's Digital Markets Act interoperability requirements exist precisely to stop dominant platforms from locking rivals out of core phone functions, and that Apple's compliance timeline, not the law itself, is the holdup. Whichever explanation is right, the practical result is the same: tens of millions of iPhone owners in Europe and China are paying for hardware that can't run the year's flagship software feature.

Apple also disclosed that cloud-based Siri AI and Apple Intelligence features carry daily usage limits, and that "expanded limits will be available for a fee in the future," per Apple's own release notes. No pricing has been announced.

A new CEO's first launch

This is the first major software rollout under Apple CEO John Ternus, who succeeded Tim Cook on September 1, 2026, according to CNBC. At the company's iPhone launch event the prior week, Ternus said the iPhone "sits at the center of an amazing ecosystem of intelligent features," calling the pitch "personal intelligence that's actually personal."

Beyond Siri

macOS 27 Golden Gate drops support for Intel Macs entirely going forward. The Apple Post reports macOS Tahoe 26 remains the last major macOS version those machines will get, though Apple says Intel Macs will keep receiving security updates. Both iOS and macOS get a slider to adjust Liquid Glass transparency, and Apple says app launches are up to 30 percent faster, according to Engadget.

watchOS 27 adds perimenopause and menopause tracking and more accurate step counting but drops the Walkie-Talkie feature. tvOS 27 skips Siri AI entirely, focusing instead on Podcasts, Music and larger text options.

iOS 27 runs on the iPhone 11 and later, but Siri AI and other Apple Intelligence features require an iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, or any iPhone 16, 17 or 18 model, per MacRumors. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, along with Apple Watch Series 12, Watch Ultra 4 and AirPods 5, are scheduled to reach stores September 18. The foldable iPhone Duo is set to follow in October, and new Mac mini and Mac Studio models are expected the following week.

What's still unresolved: Apple hasn't said when Siri AI exits beta for all users, what the fee structure for expanded daily limits will look like, or when exactly EU and Chinese users will get access.
