Anthropic Plans to Develop Its Own Drugs, Starting With Neglected Diseases

What Anthropic Actually Said

At an event called "The Briefing: AI for Science" earlier this week, Anthropic unveiled Claude Science, which it describes as an "AI workbench for scientists" that consolidates fragmented tools and datasets into one environment and can generate figures and visuals.

That much is a product launch. The bigger claim came alongside it: Anthropic said it intends to discover and develop drugs of its own.

Eric Kauderer-Abrams, Anthropic's head of life sciences, said the company will focus on treatments for "neglected" diseases, according to The Verge. That's the full extent of what was said publicly. Kauderer-Abrams did not specify what diseases would be targeted first, what would happen if the company identifies a promising drug candidate, or whether Anthropic would partner with outside organizations for the lab work, animal testing, clinical trials, or manufacturing that any approved drug requires.

Anthropic did not respond to The Verge's requests for comment seeking those details.

What It Means in Practice

The announcement puts Anthropic in an unusual competitive position. The company is simultaneously selling AI software to biotech and pharma customers while planning to develop drugs that could compete with those same customers. That tension is real, and Anthropic has not addressed it publicly.

Anthropic is not alone in courting the life sciences sector. OpenAI, Amazon, and Google all have life sciences tools and platforms of their own, according to The Verge. But Anthropic's stated intention to develop drugs directly, rather than just license tools to others who develop them, is one of the more concrete public commitments from a major frontier AI company.

The field it is entering is crowded. AI-first drug companies like Insilico and Isomorphic Labs, a Google DeepMind spinout, are already operating in this space. Major pharmaceutical companies are building or acquiring AI capabilities internally.

The Gap Between "AI Drug Discovery" and an Approved Drug

The strongest skeptical case here is not about Anthropic's technology. It's about the pipeline.

AI can compress some stages of drug development, particularly the early computational work of identifying and modeling candidate compounds. But experts are clear it cannot compress clinical trials, which exist to protect patients and require years of human data. Matthew Todd, a professor of drug discovery at University College London, told The Verge the field is "a long way off" from an AI-designed drug being approved by regulators for human use. He added that the drug discovery process would not run autonomously, with human input and supervision required throughout.

Frank von Delft, a professor of structural chemical biology at the University of Oxford and head of protein crystallography at the Oxford Centre for Medicines Discovery, said AI models "haven't yet come close to making experiments unnecessary." Drug candidates still have to be tested in the real world for efficacy, toxicity, and whether they have practical properties allowing them to be prepared, stored, and delivered safely as medicines. If Anthropic wants to develop a drug, von Delft said, it is "going to have to spend a lot on experiments."

Namshik Han, a professor at the University of Cambridge and co-founder of AI biotech startup CardiaTec, told The Verge that "AI drug discovery" is a "really broad term." AI is applied at "every single stage of drug discovery," he said, from identifying new compounds and refining them to supporting data analysis, clinical trials, and manufacturing. Every major drug company is already using AI in some form, which means Anthropic is entering a space where the technology itself is not a differentiator, and execution is everything.

What Remains Unknown

The honest read of this announcement is that Anthropic has stated an ambition, not a plan. The company has not disclosed:

  • Which specific diseases it will target
  • Whether it will conduct or fund its own laboratory experiments
  • How it intends to handle animal testing and clinical trial requirements
  • Whether it will partner with contract research organizations, academic institutions, or pharmaceutical manufacturers
  • How drug development fits into its core business model as an AI software company

Focusing on neglected diseases, as Kauderer-Abrams indicated, does carry a genuine public health rationale. These are conditions that historically receive less private investment because the commercial return is limited. If Anthropic's AI tools can reduce the upfront cost of identifying viable compounds for those diseases, that is a legitimate contribution even if it never manufactures a pill.

But "neglected diseases" also happens to be a lower-risk reputational space for a company making its first public move into drug development. It avoids direct competition with the pharmaceutical giants that are currently paying to use Claude.

It's possible Anthropic is willing to try. In the last year, the company has been actively hiring biologists and building its own wet labs, and as of the time of The Verge's reporting it had several live applications hiring for life sciences roles. Han said Anthropic has been "actively recruiting" in the area, adding that several of his academic colleagues had been approached by the company.

The Open Question

The unanswered question from Kauderer-Abrams' remarks is what Anthropic actually does when, or if, it finds a promising drug candidate. Without a fully built-out clinical trial apparatus or regulatory affairs team, Anthropic would need partners for every physical and human step between a computational hit and a treatment that reaches patients. Whether it plans to build those capabilities, contract them out, or license discoveries to others will determine whether this is a serious drug development program or a well-timed press narrative. Anthropic has not said.
