Andreessen Horowitz's Cursor and OpenRouter Stakes Top $8 Billion as Firm Closes New $8.5 Billion Fund

Andreessen Horowitz's Cursor and OpenRouter Stakes Top $8 Billion as Firm Closes New $8.5 Billion Fund
Andreessen Horowitz turned early checks into Cursor and OpenRouter into stakes worth more than $8 billion combined after SpaceX's $60 billion acquisition of Cursor and Stripe's reported $7-8 billion pursuit of OpenRouter both surfaced in August 2026. The firm also closed its fifth Growth fund at $8.5 billion. This is what functioning venture capital looks like: real risk, real payoff, zero taxpayer money involved.

Since SpaceX's roughly $60 billion all-stock acquisition of Cursor-maker Anysphere and Stripe's reported $7-to-8 billion pursuit of AI routing startup OpenRouter both surfaced within a five-day stretch in August 2026, Andreessen Horowitz's combined stake in the two companies has climbed past $8 billion, according to reporting from The Information and confirmed by multiple outlets including Crypto Briefing and Yahoo Finance.

Start with Cursor. Andreessen Horowitz backed the AI code editor's Series A in 2024 at a $400 million valuation, according to Crypto Briefing. SpaceX's all-stock deal values the company at roughly $60 billion, a 150-fold jump in two years. As the largest outside shareholder with about 10% ownership, a16z's stake in the deal comes out to roughly $6 billion.

OpenRouter is the messier story. Yahoo Finance, citing a GuruFocus report published August 18, 2026, describes Stripe as 'agreeing to acquire' OpenRouter outright. Business Insider frames it differently: citing people familiar with the matter, it reports Andreessen Horowitz and Menlo Ventures are merely 'poised to' collect a payout 'if Stripe acquires' the company. Business Insider also notes that Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and OpenRouter did not respond to requests for comment, and Stripe declined to comment. The Wall Street Journal first reported the acquisition talks; Axios reported the roughly $8 billion price tag separately.

No party involved has publicly confirmed a signed, closed transaction. What's established: OpenRouter raised $113 million in a Series B in late May 2026 at a $1.3 billion valuation. Andreessen Horowitz, whose investment was led by former general partner Anjney Midha, put in about $20 million and holds more than 17% of the company. At a $7 billion price, per Yahoo Finance's math, that stake is worth about $1.19 billion. At the higher $8 billion figure Business Insider cites, it's closer to $1.5 billion. Either way, that's a 50-to-75x return on a check written roughly a year earlier.

Menlo Ventures, led by partner Matt Murphy, put in less than $50 million for a stake north of 6%, now worth more than $500 million if the deal closes at the reported price, Business Insider reported. Other OpenRouter investors include CapitalG, Sequoia Capital, ServiceNow and Snowflake.

OpenRouter's pitch is simple: it's a switchboard letting developers route requests across different large language models based on cost, speed and capability, and it monitors for overspend and outages. The company says it has more than 10 million users, according to Business Insider. Its cofounder and CEO, Alex Atallah, also co-founded crypto marketplace OpenSea, once valued above $13 billion.

The skeptical read on this deal is straightforward. Paying six or seven times a valuation set just months earlier assumes AI infrastructure demand keeps compounding indefinitely, and that Stripe can integrate a wildly different product category into a payments company without diluting either business. Yahoo Finance's own investor takeaway flags this directly, calling valuation the chief risk and noting the deal 'assumes continued explosive AI demand and durable developer adoption.' That's a real bet, not a sure thing, and Stripe hasn't confirmed the transaction publicly.

While these two deals dominate the headlines, Andreessen Horowitz has also been raising fresh capital. The firm closed additional funding for its fifth Growth fund, bringing the total to $8.5 billion, according to a blog post from the firm and confirmed by Benzinga. David George, who leads a16z's Growth investing team, and managing partner Raghu Raghuram said the fund targets companies moving from early-stage startups into large global businesses, pointing to AI adoption, robotics, defense-industrial rebuilding, health tech and computing infrastructure as the trends driving the bet.

The Growth fund follows a separate $1.1 billion Machine Age Fund the firm announced for physical AI infrastructure: chips, memory, networking, storage, data centers and robotics, according to Benzinga. The firm says it has helped more than 100 companies through growth-stage transitions over the past seven-plus years, citing Databricks and SpaceX as examples, and it's staffing an expanded operational platform with people who've worked with Atlassian, Samsara, 1Password, Miro, PagerDuty, Segment and Workday.

What's unresolved is basic but important: whether the OpenRouter transaction has actually been signed, and at what final price. Business Insider's sourcing describes talks and a probable payout; Yahoo Finance's sourcing treats it as an agreement already reached. Neither Stripe nor Andreessen Horowitz has put a number on the record. Until one of them does, the $1.19 billion-to-$1.5 billion range for a16z's OpenRouter payday remains an estimate built on unconfirmed reporting, not a disclosed transaction value.
