William Jewell College Running Back MicahJo Barnett Dies After Sideline Medical Emergency in Season Opener

MicahJo Barnett scored a touchdown for William Jewell College on Saturday, giving his team a 7-0 lead in the season opener. Minutes later he was dead.

Barnett, a junior running back and business administration major, went down with a medical emergency on the Cardinals' sideline at Greene Stadium in Liberty, Missouri, according to William Jewell College. Liberty Police Capt. Nathan Mulch told The New York Times that Liberty Fire/EMS paramedics, who are stationed at every William Jewell home game as standard practice, were called to treat Barnett at 12:20 p.m. local time.

Paramedics worked on Barnett for several minutes before transporting him by ambulance to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Times. The game against Fort Lewis College, a fellow NCAA Division II program, was halted with 4:32 left in the first quarter, immediately after Fort Lewis punted following its first offensive series post-emergency.

Accounts differ slightly on what happened to the game itself afterward. The Guardian, NBC Sports and TMZ all reported the contest was suspended and later canceled outright. CBS News described it as "postponed." No source has published an official rescheduling notice, and no cause of death has been announced by the school, the county, or law enforcement.

The Guardian reported that Barnett "reportedly experienced seizure-like symptoms" during the emergency, a detail not confirmed independently by any other outlet in this account. Until an autopsy or medical examiner's finding is released, that detail should be treated as unverified.

William Jewell interim president Dr. Drew Van Horn addressed the tragedy Saturday afternoon. "I want to say that we appreciate the response that we've received from the sheriff's office, the police department, the EMS department, our school, the physician for the team, everybody responded so quickly, so well," Van Horn said, according to the Times. "Our hearts are heavy, and we appreciate all of the support that we have received from the greater community."

The school's athletic department posted a tribute on social media reading "Forever a Cardinal" alongside the years 2005-2026, per NBC Sports. "William Jewell College and the Liberty, Missouri, community mourn the passing of MicahJo Barnett, junior business administration major and member of Jewell Cardinal Football team and former Liberty North Eagle," the school said in a statement carried by The Guardian.

Fort Lewis College athletic director Shawn Jakubowski also issued a statement. "Our hearts are with his family, friends, teammates, coaches, and everyone at William Jewell during this incredibly difficult time," Jakubowski said, according to CBS News. Fort Lewis said its counseling staff was reaching out to its own football team as well.

William Jewell held a vigil for Barnett Saturday night at 8 p.m. on the campus quad and encouraged students and staff to use the school's counseling services and chaplain's office.

Barnett, from Shawnee Mission, Kansas, had six siblings. He led Liberty North High School, located in the same city as William Jewell's campus, to a state championship as a senior. He was opening his third season with the Cardinals after rushing for 366 yards and four touchdowns in five games in 2025 before a season-ending injury cut that year short. Over two seasons he carried the ball 108 times for 457 yards and six touchdowns in 13 games, and he was a 2025-26 Academic All-Great Lakes Valley Conference honoree.

On Saturday, Barnett carried the ball six times for 29 yards, capped by a 1-yard touchdown run with 5:15 left in the first quarter, according to live game statistics cited by the Times and NBC Sports.

No investigation has been announced, and no medical examiner's report has been made public as of this writing. The central unanswered question, one every outlet covering this story left open, is what caused a 21-year-old Division II athlete to collapse minutes after scoring a touchdown in apparent good health.
