UFC 332: Silva and Wang Cong Fight Tonight for Vacant Women's Flyweight Title in Salt Lake City

UFC 332: Silva and Wang Cong Fight Tonight for Vacant Women's Flyweight Title in Salt Lake City
Natalia Silva and Wang Cong meet tonight at Delta Center for the UFC's vacant women's flyweight title, a fight that exists only because Valentina Shevchenko tore up her back and shoulder and had to vacate the belt. Several outlets, including CBS News and Yahoo News, mislabeled the bout as a 'featherweight' title fight. It's flyweight, and the UFC's own fight card confirms it.

Natalia Silva and Wang Cong headline UFC 332 tonight at Delta Center in Salt Lake City, with the main card airing live on CBS and Paramount+ starting at 8 p.m. ET, according to the UFC's official fight card. The vacant women's flyweight title is on the line, a belt that's been empty since Valentina Shevchenko pulled out roughly a month ago with back and shoulder injuries that will sideline her for at least a year, according to CBS Sports.

CBS News, Yahoo News and Forever Delmarva all ran an identical syndicated item calling this a fight for the 'women's featherweight title.' It's not. The UFC's own event page, CBS Sports' preview and Cagesidepress's weigh-in report all confirm this is a women's flyweight title bout at 125 pounds. Three independent sources got the division right. The syndicated piece that three outlets ran got it wrong, and none of them corrected it.

A Title Fight Nobody Planned For

Silva spent months training to dethrone Shevchenko, the fighter who held the flyweight belt for nearly 2,300 days across two separate reigns, according to the UFC. Then Shevchenko tore up her back and shoulder and vacated the title, forcing Silva to retool her entire game plan with roughly 30 days' notice, she told reporters through a Portuguese interpreter, as reported by WSLS.

"We were preparing for Valentina strategically," Silva said. "Sparring was based on Valentina... At that point, I was like, 'Damn, that's the fight that I've always wanted.' But at that moment, coaches just pivoted."

Silva, 29, carries a 14-fight win streak into tonight and has gone 8-0 inside the Octagon, according to CBS Sports. Sportsbooks have her as a heavy favorite, listed between -205 and -210 depending on the book, per WSLS. DraftKings had similar odds as of Thursday, October 1, according to CBS Sports.

Her opponent, 34-year-old Wang Cong, is 10-1 and relatively new to mixed martial arts, having built her background in kickboxing, where she actually beat Shevchenko in a 2015 bout, according to WSLS. The UFC ranks Wang sixth in the division; WSLS lists her as the eighth-ranked challenger. Either way, she's not the top contender, and that's generated real pushback.

"How Cong was given the spot over higher-ranked challengers has drawn some criticism," WSLS reported. Cagesidepress was blunter, writing that "the card has been much maligned since it was announced." Wang says she's using the moment to answer her doubters. "This fight is definitely going to be exciting," she said through an interpreter. "We're going to use this performance to shut [the critics] up," according to WSLS.

That's a fair question for the UFC matchmakers to answer, not Wang. Title shots are supposed to go to whoever earned it by beating the best available competition, not whoever's schedule lined up when a reigning champion got hurt. Nobody has publicly laid out why Wang jumped higher-ranked flyweights for the vacant belt, and that's worth tracking after tonight.

The Rest of the Card

The co-main event pits former two-time flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo (25-7-1), now moved up to bantamweight, against rising 24-year-old Payton Talbott (11-1) of Reno, Nevada, according to the UFC. Talbott told CBS Sports that expected 2026 matchups against fellow Americans like Sean O'Malley fell through, leaving tonight as likely his only fight of the year.

Lightweights King Green (36-17-1, 1 NC) and Esteban Ribovics (16-3) meet in what CBS Sports projects as a Fight of the Night contender. At Friday's weigh-ins, Ribovics missed weight, coming in at 156.5 pounds against a 156-pound lightweight limit, according to Cagesidepress's official weigh-in results.

Croatian fighter Roberto Soldić, a three-time KSW champion who already owns a win over former middleweight champ Dricus Du Plessis, makes his UFC debut against Detroit's Khaos Williams, according to the UFC. The main card opens with middleweight Ateba Gautier (11-1) of Cameroon chasing his tenth knockout win against Russia's Roman Kopylov.

All weigh-ins came in on target elsewhere on the card, per Cagesidepress, with early prelims having started at 4 p.m. ET and prelims following at 6 p.m. ET.

The question heading into the main card tonight isn't just who wins. It's whether the UFC explains, after the fact, why a No. 6 or No. 8 ranked contender got the first crack at a vacant title over fighters ranked higher in the division. Shevchenko's timeline for a return, and whether either Silva or Wang will face her once she's healthy, remains unresolved as of tonight.
