Tyler Adams Gets the USMNT Armband Back as Tim Ream Retires

Tyler Adams Gets the USMNT Armband Back as Tim Ream Retires
Mauricio Pochettino named Tyler Adams captain of the U.S. men's national team on Friday, handing the role back to the Bournemouth midfielder who wore it at the 2022 World Cup. The move comes days after Tim Ream retired from international soccer following the team's round-of-16 exit this summer.

Tyler Adams is the captain of the U.S. men's national team again. Head coach Mauricio Pochettino made it official Friday in Tempe, Arizona, ahead of Saturday's friendly against Mexico in Glendale.

The 27-year-old Bournemouth midfielder takes over from Tim Ream, who held the armband through this past summer's World Cup run, where the U.S. reached the round of 16 before losing to Belgium. Ream, 38, announced his retirement from international soccer on Tuesday. The U.S. Soccer Federation honored him that same night during a 4-2 win over Chile in his hometown of St. Louis, according to Field Level Media.

Adams isn't new to this job. He captained the USMNT at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, playing every minute of a tournament that ended in a round-of-16 loss to the Netherlands.

Pochettino's Pick

"Tyler is going to be our next captain, our captain again," Pochettino told reporters Friday, according to the New York Post. "I think we've been in a very good relationship in the last two years. I think we were talking a lot, and I think he knows what I expect, and he's a perfect role model for everyone in the way that the philosophy, the future, representing that amazing country. I think he's the player and the person that can lead that period that we have ahead."

Pochettino told his team about the decision a day earlier, which he said he made alongside his coaching staff, according to BCE Football News. Asked whether Adams would hold the role all the way through the 2030 World Cup, Pochettino said yes, provided the midfielder "behaved well" — a caveat-laden endorsement, but an endorsement all the same.

Adams Responds

Adams didn't try to reinvent himself for the cameras.

"I'm extremely honored and grateful for the opportunity," Adams said. "I think that, like Mauricio said, we've obviously built an amazing relationship over the past two years with all the staff, with my teammates here, going into this past World Cup. And I think as we start a new cycle, I'm excited to be able to help my teammates and the staff in any way possible in order to win, grow the federation and ultimately take that next step."

He was blunt about what the armband actually changes. "Getting the armband, it doesn't mean anything to me in being a leader or being different from who I am," Adams said. "I'm gonna be the exact same person. I'm gonna try to lead this group into a winning culture and continue to build what we're trying to build here. I want to represent my teammates in the best way possible. I want to represent the country in the best way possible, of course."

The Résumé

Adams has 60 caps for the U.S. and two goals, both against Mexico — fitting, given Saturday's matchup. A Wappingers Falls, New York, native, he came up through MLS with the New York Red Bulls before moving to RB Leipzig in Germany's Bundesliga from 2018 to 2022. He spent the 2022-23 season with Leeds United in the Premier League before joining Bournemouth, where he's now in his fourth season, according to Field Level Media.

The captaincy change lands at the start of a new four-year cycle aimed at the 2030 World Cup, which will be co-hosted across Spain, Portugal and Morocco. For a federation that has now watched back-to-back round-of-16 exits — 2022 under a different roster, 2026 under Pochettino — the captaincy isn't just ceremonial. It's a signal of who the coaching staff trusts to set the tone heading into a tournament the U.S. isn't hosting and can't count on favorable draws or home-field advantage to get through.

Saturday's friendly against Mexico in Glendale is Adams' first match wearing the armband in this new cycle. How Pochettino's roster performs over the next four years, and whether Adams stays captain the whole way as promised, remains to be seen.
