Tua Tagovailoa Ruled Out for Falcons Opener, Cooper Rush Starts Against Steelers

Tua Tagovailoa Ruled Out for Falcons Opener, Cooper Rush Starts Against Steelers
Tua Tagovailoa suffered an oblique injury in practice Thursday and is out for Atlanta's Week 1 game at Pittsburgh, head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed Friday. That leaves the Falcons starting their third-string quarterback, journeyman Cooper Rush, with Michael Penix Jr. also inactive as he continues rehabbing a torn ACL.

The Atlanta Falcons will open the 2026 season Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers without either quarterback who spent the entire offseason competing for the starting job.

Head coach Raheem Morris told reporters Friday that Tua Tagovailoa suffered an oblique injury during individual drills at Thursday's practice and is now "week-to-week." Morris said the injury is unrelated to the tight back Tagovailoa arrived at training camp with, which had already cost him about a week of practice time, according to ESPN's Marc Raimondi.

"Disappointed for him. Obviously, he's a very competitive person," Morris said, according to Sports Illustrated. "I don't really have a medical degree, so I'll let you guys classify it."

Cooper Rush, a 32-year-old journeyman signed by Atlanta out of camp, will start instead. Undrafted rookie Jack Strand out of Minnesota State-Moorhead will back him up.

Morris had named Tagovailoa the team's Week 1 starter just days earlier, on September 7, ending an offseason quarterback battle that never produced a clear winner. Fox News noted the Falcons are now on their sixth different Week 1 starting quarterback in six seasons.

Rush inherits a tough assignment

Rush has appeared in 42 career games with 16 starts over eight NFL seasons, seven with the Dallas Cowboys and one with the Baltimore Ravens last year, according to Bleacher Report. For his career he's completed 364 of 596 passes for 3,766 yards, 20 touchdowns and 14 interceptions, a 61.1 percent completion rate.

His most recent stint wasn't pretty. With Baltimore last season, Rush went 0-2 as a starter across four total appearances, throwing for just 303 yards with zero touchdowns and four interceptions, according to NFL.com. CBS Sports reported he was benched in favor of Tyler Huntley after a poor Week 6 performance against the Los Angeles Rams.

Strand, meanwhile, became a preseason folk hero in Atlanta. The undrafted rookie completed 24 of 36 passes for 306 yards, one touchdown and one interception across three exhibition games and also rushed for two touchdowns, according to CBS Sports.

Penix still not ready

Michael Penix Jr., last year's presumptive franchise quarterback, tore his ACL in a Week 11 loss to the Carolina Panthers and has been medically cleared to return. But he told reporters he isn't rushing back.

"I had that conversation and I just told [Morris], 'I'm not where I want to be right now,'" Penix said, according to Fox News. "I want to be able to be 100 percent so I can help this team win football games. And I'm really close."

CBS Sports reported that NFL Media's Ian Rapoport had suggested the starting job was Penix's for the taking before his recovery timeline slipped past the start of the season. James Palmer's reporting, cited by CBS Sports, described Penix as healthy but not yet where he wants to be, raising the question of whether he could take over as soon as Atlanta's Week 2 home opener against Carolina.

What it means for Tagovailoa's roster spot

Atlanta signed Tagovailoa to a one-year deal in March after the Miami Dolphins released him, absorbing an NFL-record $99 million dead cap hit to do it, according to CBS Sports. He struggled in his final season in Miami, going 6-8 as a starter with a career-high 15 interceptions before being benched for rookie Quinn Ewers.

He didn't turn things around in Atlanta's preseason either, which is part of why Penix was in position to potentially reclaim the job before his knee slowed him down. NBC Sports raised the possibility that if Rush plays well enough to start again in Week 2, and if Penix still isn't ready, the Falcons could simply move on from Tagovailoa altogether when he's healthy enough to return.

Pittsburgh, whose defense contributed to Tagovailoa's benching and eventual release from Miami last December, saw the betting line shift in its favor once his absence was confirmed. The Steelers moved from 3.5-point favorites to 6-point favorites, according to NBC Sports.

Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET Sunday on FOX. The key questions heading in are whether Rush can hold off the Steelers' defense on short reps and whether he plays himself into a longer look that could come at Tagovailoa's expense once he's finally healthy enough to compete for the job again.
