Titans Linebacker Cedric Gray Enters Concussion Protocol After UTV Crash Days Before Jets Opener

Tennessee Titans linebacker Cedric Gray is in the NFL's concussion protocol after a utility terrain vehicle accident over Labor Day weekend, the team announced Monday, September 7. Tennessee opens its season Sunday at Nissan Stadium against the New York Jets.

"Over the weekend, Cedric Gray was involved in a UTV accident in Tennessee and sustained a concussion and minor injuries," the Titans said in a statement. "We look forward to Cedric returning to the field soon and in full health when he clears the NFL's concussion protocol."

Gray was driving the UTV when the crash happened, according to Bleacher Report, citing ESPN's Turron Davenport. A person familiar with the details told The Associated Press, as reported by NFL.com, that neither alcohol nor reckless driving were factors. A separate source told ESPN the same, according to the New York Post. The exact circumstances of the crash, including whether it happened on a road or off-road, have not been disclosed.

A Breakout Season Now in Jeopardy

Gray, a fourth-round pick out of North Carolina in 2024, broke out in his second NFL season. Reports differ slightly on the exact tackle count. Newsweek, the New York Post, Bleacher Report and Sporting News put his 2025 total at 164 tackles, ranking fourth in the league. NFL.com, citing the AP, and the Titans' own team site list 160 tackles, ranking fifth. Either way, Gray was one of the most productive linebackers in football last year across 16 starts.

Pro Football Focus graded him as the No. 8 linebacker in the NFL, according to Bleacher Report, with a 92.7 run-defense grade that ranked second at the position and among the top marks in the PFF era. Newsweek reported his overall grade of 78.9 ranked seventh among 88 qualified linebackers. He also notched two fumble recoveries, a sack and four pass breakups.

Gray has prior experience with the NFL's concussion protocol. Field Level Media, via KFGO, reported he missed a December 21 game against the Kansas City Chiefs last season due to a concussion.

To play Sunday, Gray has to clear every phase of the NFL's mandated return-to-participation program. That starts with avoiding activities that could aggravate symptoms, then progresses to non-contact work, and ends with sign-off from an independent neurological consultant assigned to the club. If that consultant agrees with the team physician that his concussion has resolved, he can return to contact practice and eventually game action. There is no fixed timetable, and a player cannot shortcut the process.

If Gray can't go, the ripple effects hit Tennessee's linebacker room hard. A to Z Sports reported that veteran Cody Barton, third-year player James Williams Sr., and rookie second-round pick Anthony Hill Jr. are the most likely candidates to absorb his snaps. Bleacher Report specifically named Williams Sr. as the probable starter in Gray's place, noting he has 52 career tackles and a sack across two seasons. That outlet also flagged the obvious tactical wrinkle: expect the Jets to lean hard on running back Breece Hall, both between the tackles and as a checkdown option for quarterback Geno Smith, if Tennessee's run defense is without its best run-stopper.

The crash adds Gray to a growing list of NFL players hurt in ATV or UTV-related incidents away from the field. The New York Post noted that Giants safety Xavier McKinney was seriously injured in a similar incident during a 2022 bye-week trip to Mexico. Injuries sustained on personal time, outside team facilities and away from football activity, remain entirely within players' own judgment. The NFL's concussion protocol doesn't care how the head injury happened. It only cares whether the player is medically cleared before he's allowed back on the field.

Gray's status has not been determined. The Titans have not set a target return date, and clearance depends on an independent neurologist's evaluation that hasn't happened yet. Whether he suits up Sunday at Nissan Stadium remains an open question that won't be answered until closer to kickoff.
