Taylor Swift Becomes Most-Awarded Artist in MTV VMA History, Madonna Takes Artist of the Year

Taylor Swift is now the most-decorated artist in MTV Video Music Awards history. She passed Beyoncé's record of 30 career wins at the 2026 ceremony, held Sunday, September 27, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, according to NBC News and NBC Los Angeles.

Swift's night started with the inaugural Artist Director Honors, a new award MTV created to recognize artists "whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music video and advanced the art of visual storytelling," according to NBC News. That win alone put her at 31 career VMAs, breaking her tie with Beyoncé. She then won Video of the Year for "The Fate of Ophelia" and Best Direction, according to NBC Los Angeles, which put her final total at 33.

NBC News's own report only cited her total reaching 32 after the Video of the Year win, without separately tallying the Best Direction trophy. The Guardian confirmed Swift "won three categories" during the telecast, which lines up with the 33 figure from NBC Los Angeles: Artist Director Honors, Video of the Year, and Best Direction.

Accepting the Artist Director Honors from her friend Dakota Johnson, who called her "an architect of emotional landscapes," Swift said she's made roughly 60 music videos over 20 years and written or directed 18 of them, according to NBC News. She also debuted the music video for her new song "Patient Zero," which she directed and which stars Colin Farrell and Johnson, with cinematography by Oscar winner Emmanuel Lubezki.

"Patient Zero" is Swift's first single since she married Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce at Madison Square Garden in July, according to WBAL-TV. NBC News reported the song broke the record for most-streamed song by a female artist in a single day so far in 2026, following its Friday midnight release as part of the deluxe "Life of a Showgirl: The Encore" edition.

Madonna's Return

Madonna, who entered the night with either 11 nominations according to WBAL's pre-show reporting or 13 according to the Guardian's post-show count, walked away with seven total wins including three during the broadcast: Best Collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter, Best Dance, and Artist of the Year, according to the Guardian.

It marked her first VMA performance in 23 years, since her onstage kiss with Britney Spears in 2003. She opened the show performing "Bring Your Love" with Carpenter, then brought out Charli xcx for a reworked version of "Danceteria," backed by dancers including actor Julia Garner and Debi Mazar, according to Euronews.

Accepting Artist of the Year over Swift, Carpenter, Ariana Grande, Bruno Mars, and Morgan Wallen, the 68-year-old Madonna referenced her infamous 1980s wardrobe malfunction at the first VMAs before turning serious: "I spent the last year and a half finding myself, believing in myself and really making the music that I wanted to make," she said, according to the Guardian.

A Tribute to Dolly Parton

Swift used her Video of the Year speech to honor country legend Dolly Parton, who died in Nashville last month of cancer at age 80, according to the Guardian and NBC News. Swift called her "the ultimate showgirl" and said, "listening to her songs, it's like watching the best music video you have ever seen in your life, every single time you hear what she's written," according to NBC News.

Kacey Musgraves performed "I Will Always Love You" as part of a broader tribute segment, and British singer Raye delivered a medley of Parton covers, according to AOL UK. Nirvana's surviving members accepted the Video Vanguard Award and K-pop star Lisa performed her single "SaWaDiKa" and won Best Pop, according to a Ground News roundup of the ceremony.

Swift's Video of the Year win and the new Artist Director Honors category mean two separate title claims are now circulating: "most-awarded artist" and "most-decorated music video director" in VMA history, both cited by the Guardian. The two claims aren't identical achievements, and outlets have folded them together in headlines without always distinguishing which record applies to which category.

Snoop Dogg hosted the two-hour broadcast, marking the VMAs' first trip outside the New York/New Jersey area since 2017, according to WBAL-TV. MTV has not announced whether next year's ceremony will return to the East Coast or stay on the West Coast, leaving the location for the 2027 show an open question.
