Scottie Scheffler Trails by Two at East Lake, Still on Pace to Break His Own PGA Tour Scoring Record

Two back, and still the man to beat

Scottie Scheffler entered the third round of the Tour Championship on Saturday tied for sixth at 8 under par, two strokes behind a three-way tie at the top between Chris Gotterup, Ryan Gerard and Viktor Hovland, according to the PGA Tour's live leaderboard. Rory McIlroy sat one shot ahead of Scheffler at 9 under through 16 holes.

Scheffler has won seven of his last 10 PGA Tour starts when he began the weekend within two shots of the lead, according to the NY Post and Yahoo Sports. He opened East Lake with rounds of 65 and 67.

The Tour Championship pays out a $40 million purse, with $10 million going to the winner, according to Forbes. Under the format the Tour adopted in 2023, there are no strokes awarded for FedEx Cup standing position. Whoever wins the tournament outright wins the FedEx Cup, according to The Sports Leader.

A quiet season by his own standard

Scheffler has only two victories this year, a modest total by the standard he set winning seven times in 2024 and six in 2025. But the underlying numbers suggest a different story. He has 12 top-five finishes in 19 starts, five runner-up finishes and 10 top-10s, according to the PGA Tour's own site.

His lone win before East Lake came at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, by eight strokes, according to the NY Post. He followed that with a tie for 12th at the BMW Championship while fighting hand, foot and mouth disease, a viral illness that left him with blisters on his hands, feet and throat and made it hard to grip a club, according to the Boston Globe. Scheffler said he was about 95 percent healed heading into East Lake, per the Globe.

The record chase

Scheffler's season-long raw scoring average stood at 67.96 after his second-round 67 on Friday, putting him on pace to break the PGA Tour record of 67.99 he set last season, according to Yahoo Sports and hitc. He would need to average roughly 67 or better across his final two rounds this weekend to get there.

He already owns four of the six lowest raw scoring averages in tour history: 2026 (67.96), 2025 (67.99), 2024 (68.01) and 2023 (68.26). Only Webb Simpson's 2020 season (68.06) and Tiger Woods' 2000 campaign (68.17) sit between them, per hitc's tabulation.

Raw scoring average doesn't account for course difficulty, so comparing seasons isn't perfectly apples-to-apples. Woods still holds the tougher, difficulty-adjusted scoring record at 67.79, set in 2000 and matched in 2007, a mark Scheffler is not threatening this year, according to the NY Post. By that measure, Scheffler's raw-scoring streak is impressive but not the same thing as topping the toughest number on the books.

Money and the Player of the Year race

Scheffler collected a $23 million bonus last week as the leading player in the FedEx Cup points standings entering the playoffs' final event, and his tour earnings have topped $20 million for a fourth straight year, according to the Boston Globe. A strong week at East Lake would also push him further up the tour's career money list, which Tiger Woods has topped for 26 years, per the Globe.

Scheffler has won Player of the Year four straight years and a win this week would tie him with Woods for five consecutive awards, from 1999 through 2003. Wyndham Clark has three wins this season, including the U.S. Open and last week's BMW Championship, and the Globe describes the race as tight heading into the finale.

East Lake, and what comes after it

Scheffler has a mixed history at East Lake: a heartbreaking loss to McIlroy in 2022, a tie for sixth in 2023, victory and his first FedEx Cup in 2024, and a tie for fourth last year. McIlroy, second choice in the betting markets after his third-place finish at the BMW Championship, has won the Tour Championship three times, in 2016, 2019 and 2022, according to Forbes.

Gary Woodland, who returned to competition this year after brain surgery, moved from 31st to 18th in the standings with a tie for fourth last week and qualified for East Lake without needing a strokes cushion under the new format. "You're spotting Scottie six or seven shots. We had a hard enough time not spotting him any shots," Woodland said Wednesday, according to The Sports Leader.

The PGA Tour is set to overhaul the postseason finale in 2028, moving to a two-week match-play format across multiple courses, which would end East Lake's long run as the tournament's automatic annual host, according to The Sports Leader and the Boston Globe. That leaves Scheffler at least one more crack at East Lake beyond this week before the format changes.

The final round is scheduled for Sunday, August 30. Whether Scheffler closes the two-shot gap, breaks his own scoring record and locks up a fifth straight Player of the Year award, or whether Gotterup, Gerard, Hovland or McIlroy get in the way, will be decided on the course, not in the record book.
