Premier League Clubs Scramble Before Tuesday's Transfer Deadline: Alvarez, Fernandez, Gakpo All in Limbo

The summer transfer window opened June 15. It closes at 23:00 BST on Tuesday, September 1. Every top European league, including the Bundesliga, Serie A, LaLiga and Ligue 1, is closing at the same time this year, according to the Premier League's official deadline day guide.

Clubs still get a two-hour grace period after the deadline if they file a deal sheet in time, per the same Premier League source. So don't expect silence at 11:01pm.

Chelsea's Midfield Domino

Enzo Fernandez missed Chelsea's Sunday win over Brighton. According to the BBC, his future is tangled up with Manchester City, where manager Enzo Maresca previously coached him at Chelsea. City needs bodies after losing Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Nico Gonzalez and Tijjani Reijnders this summer.

A Fernandez sale would reportedly break Manchester City's own transfer record, topping the £116m they paid for Elliot Anderson earlier this window, per the BBC.

If Fernandez goes, Chelsea has already lined up Monaco's Lamine Camara as a replacement, the BBC reported. That would be Chelsea's 13th incoming signing this window. On departures, Chelsea has already moved more than 30 players out and is on pace to beat its own Premier League single-season sales record of £300m set last year, according to the BBC. Mykhailo Mudryk wants a loan out. Pedro Neto and Tosin Adarabioyo's futures are unresolved. Add Dario Essugo, Deivid Washington and Shim Mheuka to the list of possible exits.

Alvarez's Standoff With Atletico

Julian Alvarez wants out of Atletico Madrid. Atletico won't sell him to Barcelona but will do business with Arsenal, according to the BBC, which values the deal at roughly €150m (£128m).

Alvarez skipped multiple training sessions and didn't travel for Saturday's match against Sevilla. Manager Diego Simeone said Alvarez "wasn't well enough" to make the trip, per the BBC, while also insisting he'll "do everything" to make Alvarez feel wanted if he stays. Atletico hasn't clarified which version is operative.

Liverpool's Winger Reshuffle

Manchester City has opened talks to sign Liverpool's Cody Gakpo, and the Dutch international is reportedly open to the move, according to the BBC. City is offering around £85m and is said to be Gakpo's preferred destination, though Tottenham is also interested.

Liverpool says it won't sign off on losing Gakpo unless it lands a replacement winger beyond Bradley Barcola, whose arrival from Paris Saint-Germain is separately being finalized in a deal that could reach €145m with add-ons, according to FootballTransfers, which reported his medical took place Sunday.

Crystal Palace forward Ismaila Sarr has been left out of Palace's matchday squad for the season's first two games and wants a move to Anfield, according to FootballTransfers, which cited transfer reporter Alex Crook saying Sarr is "pushing" the club to sell. Sarr scored 21 goals in 45 appearances last season and has deleted references to Palace from his Instagram account, leaving only a photo of himself in a Senegal shirt, FootballTransfers reported. Palace has been reluctant to sell despite Sarr's contract not expiring until 2029.

Liverpool has also opened talks about a possible move for Chelsea's Pedro Neto as a further Gakpo replacement option, per FootballTransfers, and reached a verbal agreement to sign 18-year-old Genk goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans for €35m, with that deal not kicking in until 2027.

Tottenham's Costly Rebuild, Rough Start

Tottenham has spent more than £300m this summer on the likes of Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and a Manchester City double swoop for Savio and Omar Marmoush, according to the Premier League. That spending hasn't translated to results: Spurs have lost their first two matches of the season, per the Express.

More moves are in progress. Everton and Tottenham have agreed a roughly £60m deal for Iliman Ndiaye, with personal terms done and a medical expected imminently, according to transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano as cited by the Express. Richarlison is expected to move the other way to Everton in a deal worth about £35m, per Sky Sports reporting relayed by the Express. Juventus is closing in on a loan for Pape Matar Sarr, who reportedly told manager Roberto De Zerbi he wanted out after Spurs' opening-day loss to Newcastle, with a mandatory buy clause of £25.6m under certain conditions, according to Romano. Mikey Moore is also expected to leave north London before the deadline, the Express reported.

None of these deals are done. Alvarez hasn't trained in days. Fernandez sat out a Premier League match. Gakpo's move depends on Liverpool landing a replacement first. Whether any of it closes before Tuesday's 11pm cutoff, or spills into the two-hour grace window, remains uncertain with hundreds of millions of pounds riding on the answer.
