Patriots CB Christian Gonzalez Won't Commit to Playing Seahawks Opener as Contract Talks Stall

The Patriots open their season Wednesday against the team that beat them in the Super Bowl, and their best defensive player still won't say if he's playing.

Christian Gonzalez, New England's Pro Bowl cornerback, has no contract extension four days before kickoff at Seattle. Asked directly by reporters Saturday if he'd play under his current rookie deal, Gonzalez dodged. "I'm focused on today, right now, this practice," he said, according to NFL.com. "Worried about that right now, so we'll focus on that."

Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald and Boston 25 News reporter Lauren Walsh got similar non-answers earlier in the week.

How This Got Here

On July 25, Patriots owner Robert Kraft told reporters the team had offered Gonzalez a deal that would make him the highest-paid cornerback and highest-paid Patriot in franchise history, according to NFL.com. Gonzalez didn't appreciate his owner airing negotiation details in public.

Three weeks later, on August 15, the Seahawks signed cornerback Devon Witherspoon to a four-year, $132 million extension, setting a $33 million-per-year market rate, per NFL.com. That deal reportedly complicated New England's negotiations rather than simplifying them. By August 25, Gonzalez was publicly calling the process "frustrating," and a Patriots executive said there's no "deadline" on getting it done, per NFL.com.

Gonzalez's trainer told 98.5 The Sports Hub's Felger & Mazz show that the money offered is comparable to Witherspoon's deal, but "the contract language is trash," according to NBC Sports Boston. Gonzalez said he had no issue with his trainer speaking publicly about it.

The Case On Both Sides

Gonzalez has two years left on his rookie contract because the Patriots already exercised his fifth-year option. Sports Illustrated's coverage also notes Gonzalez has missed 17 games across his first three seasons, which complicates the case for an early extension.

But Gonzalez earned All-Pro recognition in 2024 and a Pro Bowl nod last season, finishing the playoffs with an interception, a sack, and a league-leading seven passes defensed, per NFL.com. Sports Illustrated points out that almost every other high-profile player from the 2023 draft class has already been extended. Neither side has said publicly where exactly the disconnect is, so it's not possible to judge which position is more reasonable.

Head coach Mike Vrabel isn't touching the speculation. "There's no 'Is it almost done? Is it not almost done?' I don't wanna deal with hypotheticals or speculation," Vrabel said, according to NBC Sports Boston. "It's important to focus on Seattle. If we don't play better than we played the last time we played them, we're going to struggle."

Other Injury News Cutting Both Ways

New England got better news on running back TreVeyon Henderson, who missed three straight practices with a right ankle injury after slipping on the turf on August 24. The Boston Globe's Christopher Price reported Henderson avoided a serious injury and should be "good to go" for Week 1, citing a league source. If he can't play, Rhamondre Stevenson would likely carry the load, with newly acquired Corey Kiner as the backup option after New England traded for him from Arizona.

Backup offensive lineman Ben Brown was also absent from Saturday's practice, per the Boston Herald.

Seattle has its own question mark. Safety Nick Emmanwori's Week 1 status is "iffy" as he recovers from July arthroscopic ankle surgery, according to the Tacoma News Tribune's Gregg Bell. Losing Emmanwori would be notable against a Patriots offense that added receivers Romeo Doubs and three-time All-Pro A.J. Brown this offseason, plus a third-year Drake Maye running Josh McDaniels' system for a second season, per Yahoo Sports.

The Patriots release their first official injury report of the week Sunday evening. That report should clarify Henderson's and Ben Brown's status, but it won't settle the bigger question hanging over Foxboro: whether New England's best cover corner takes the field in Seattle on a contract he says is frustrating him, or sits it out entirely.
