No. 1 Texas Survives Tennessee 20-17 in Knoxville as Trump Attends and Talks Up College Sports Bill

Texas is 4-0 with two top-15 wins, and that's the whole story if you strip out the politics. The No. 1 Longhorns beat No. 14 Tennessee 20-17 on Saturday at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, according to the Associated Press, via Yahoo Sports. It was ugly, close, and nearly blown.

Raleek Brown ran for 67 yards and two touchdowns, including a 4-yard score with 5:41 left that put Texas up 20-10, the AP reported. Colin Simmons tied the Texas program record with five sacks, part of a 10-sack defensive outing that made life miserable for Tennessee freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon all afternoon, according to University of Tennessee Athletics postgame notes.

Brandon answered late. He capped an 80-yard drive with a 30-yard touchdown pass to Mike Matthews with 1:22 remaining, cutting the deficit to three, per the AP. Tennessee recovered the ensuing onside kick when linebacker Arion Carter came up with the ball, giving the Vols one last shot. On the final play, Tennessee's Jelani McDonald batted away Brandon's Hail Mary intended for Travis Smith Jr. in the end zone, sealing the win for Texas.

Simmons drew a separate headline for a different reason. He was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct after what the officiating crew described as simulating restroom use during a sack celebration, the AP reported. Sarkisian addressed it postgame: "We took him out, we addressed it and put him back in. At that point, I'm not going to give the guy a death penalty over an unsportsmanlike conduct. We got to fix it, though. That can't continue."

Trump's Visit and a Halftime Pitch on Legislation

President Trump attended the game, arriving via Air Force One with a flyover of the sold-out, 101,915-seat stadium before kickoff, according to Fox News and the Daily Wire. The PA announcer told the crowd to look up, and the flyover drew a roar, Fox News reported.

During halftime, with Texas leading 10-3, Trump sat down with Clay Travis of Sport & State for an on-camera interview, the Daily Wire reported. Trump praised both programs and then turned to legislation. "I think the House will come through, too," he said, referring to his expectation that the House of Representatives will pass the Protect College Sports Act once it returns to session, according to the Daily Wire. Neither the Daily Wire nor the other sources detailed the bill's specific provisions in this coverage, and no vote has been scheduled based on the reporting available. Trump has attended a string of major sporting events in 2026, including the College Football Playoff National Championship in January, an NBA Finals game in June, the FIFA World Cup final in July, and the IndyCar Freedom 250 in August, the Daily Wire noted, and he was scheduled to attend the Presidents Cup at Medinah Country Club the following day.

An opinion piece from Jammin' 99.9 FM framed the presidential visit as adding "political stakes" and even joked that the only sustained offensive rhythm of the game came while Secret Service cleared a path for Trump during the anthem.

Saturday marked the first on-campus meeting ever between these two programs, according to Tennessee Athletics. The three previous matchups all came at the Cotton Bowl, in 1951, 1953, and 1969, with Texas winning the two most recent. Tennessee's all-time record against Associated Press No. 1 teams fell to 2-18 with the loss.

Sarkisian, whose team now has wins over Ohio State and Tennessee within a two-week span, was unapologetic about the physical style. "For us, we've got more of these to go. We have 7 ranked opponents we have still yet to play. That's why I'm not gonna apologize for how we beat a top-15 team on the road, when others don't even play them," he said, according to Jammin' 99.9 FM.

The next test comes as Texas opens SEC conference play against tougher competition over the following two months. Whether the Longhorns can cut the penalty count and protect Manning better than they did in Knoxville is the open question Sarkisian himself raised postgame.
