Memphis Wrestling Legend Bill Dundee Dies at 82, One Day After Tribute From His Peers

"Superstar" Bill Dundee, one of the defining figures of Memphis wrestling, died early Sunday, September 6, at age 82. His son, former WWE wrestler Jamie Dundee (who competed as JC Ice), announced the death on Facebook, writing that his father died at approximately 3:30 a.m. and signing the post "Bill's Boy."

No cause of death has been publicly disclosed, according to multiple outlets including TMZ, Complex and Post Wrestling.

From the circus to the ring

Dundee was born William Cruickshanks on October 24, 1943, in Scotland and raised in Australia. According to Wrestling Inc., he joined the circus as a trapeze artist at 16, and he credited that acrobatic training with giving him the agility to compete despite standing only about 5-foot-7 in a business built around size.

He began wrestling professionally in Australia in 1962, per Wrestling Inc., and spent more than a decade there before relocating to the United States. Sources differ slightly on the exact year he landed in Memphis, the Los Angeles Times citing 1974, but all agree the move placed him at the center of the Memphis territory for the rest of his career.

The Lawler rivalry

Dundee's legacy is inseparable from his decades-long relationship with Jerry "The King" Lawler. According to the LA Times, their rivalry ignited in 1977 when Dundee beat Lawler at the Mid-South Coliseum and walked away with $2,000 of Lawler's own money. The two alternated between bitter opponents and championship tag partners for years, winning multiple regional and world tag titles together, including two AWA World Tag Team Championship reigns in 1987, according to Post Wrestling.

Wrestling Inc. reported the feud produced some of the era's most outlandish stipulation matches, including one bout where Lawler put his own hair on the line against Dundee's wife's hair, and another where Dundee won Lawler's Cadillac.

Dundee held the AWA Southern Heavyweight Championship nine times, a title central to the Memphis territory through the 1970s and '80s. He also worked as a booker, shaping storylines in Memphis and later for Bill Watts' Mid-South Wrestling in the mid-1980s, according to Post Wrestling.

Beyond Memphis

His career took him through Jim Crockett Promotions, Central States Wrestling, Florida Championship Wrestling and the USWA. In the 1990s he appeared in World Championship Wrestling as "Sir William," managing Lord Steven Regal, though Wrestling Inc. reported that run ended early due to a contract dispute. Dundee also told interviewers he was once considered for an undisclosed WWE role that he believed was blocked by Undertaker, a claim that has not been independently corroborated by WWE.

Dundee wrestled his final match in December 2019, according to TMZ and Complex, and was inducted into the Memphis Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2017.

Health decline and a final tribute

Jamie Dundee revealed in 2023 on Dutch Mantell's podcast that his father was living with stage-three dementia. That diagnosis has not been publicly linked to his death.

Just one day before he died, Memphis Wrestling devoted a segment of its September 5 broadcast to honoring Dundee at its WrestleCenter, with announcer Dustin Starr introducing him and members of the roster lining up to greet him, according to F4Wonline. Earlier in August, Lawler had posted a video calling out his old rival for one more match, per ITR Wrestling, a callback the promotion built on for the tribute segment.

WWE released a statement Sunday expressing condolences to Dundee's family, friends and fans. Wrestling personality Conrad Thompson, who first reported the death on social media, wrote that Dundee "was a brilliant wrestling mind and performer for decades."

Dundee is survived by his son, Jamie. His daughter, Donna, who was married to tag-team legend Bobby Eaton, died in 2021, according to Wrestling Inc.

Memphis Wrestling has not announced a public memorial service as of this writing. Given the timing of last week's on-air tribute, wrestling media outlets including F4Wonline and Post Wrestling are likely to continue documenting reaction from the wrestlers and promoters who worked alongside Dundee across his five-decade career.
