Kyler Murray Suffers Concussion in Vikings Debut, Ruled Out as Minnesota Rallies to Beat Packers 39-22

Kyler Murray's debut as the Minnesota Vikings' starting quarterback did not survive the first quarter.

Murray, signed by Minnesota this offseason to be the franchise's next quarterback answer, threw an interception on his second play from scrimmage Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium, picked off by Green Bay Packers cornerback Keisean Nixon. Three drives later, his day ended entirely.

On third-and-7 from the Vikings' 33-yard line, Murray scrambled around the right end and slid to the ground. Packers defensive end Lukas Van Ness got a hand and forearm on Murray's helmet as he went down, according to Fox News and WFMD. A split second later, safety Javon Bullard drove his shoulder into the side of Murray's exposed head, according to Newsday, knocking his helmet completely off.

Murray lay on the ground with his legs kicking, Newsday reported. Vikings linemen Brian O'Neill and Donovan Jackson immediately waved for the medical staff. Fox News and WFMD both described Murray briefly extending one arm rigidly after the hit, a posture known as a fencing response that can follow a significant blow to the head. Other outlets covering the game did not report that detail.

Bullard was flagged 15 yards for unnecessary roughness. Murray eventually walked off under his own power, flanked by athletic trainers, and went straight to the locker room rather than the medical tent, according to the New York Times and USA Today.

The Vikings ruled Murray out for the rest of the game and placed him in the NFL's concussion protocol. He finished 3 of 5 passing for 18 yards with the interception, adding nine rushing yards on two carries, per USA Today.

Coach Kevin O'Connell told reporters after the game he had no definitive update. "He seemed to be doing pretty well," O'Connell said, according to the New York Times, "but I wouldn't medically quote me on that. ... We'll take it day by day and see how he comes in tomorrow."

Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson said the team's focus shifted immediately to Murray's health. "Definitely thinking about Kyler," Jefferson said, according to Fox News. "Definitely prayers out to him. Definitely don't want to see one of our brothers go down with that type of injury."

Wentz Steps In, Vikings Win Anyway

Carson Wentz, the Vikings' primary backup, took over and completed 12 of 19 passes for 133 yards and three touchdowns, including two to Jefferson, according to the New York Times. Minnesota rallied to win 39-22.

The quarterback depth chart behind Murray was itself a storyline heading into the opener. J.J. McCarthy, the 2024 first-round pick who started 10 games for Minnesota last season, lost the starting competition to Murray in the offseason and was inactive Sunday as the emergency third-string quarterback, meaning he could only have entered if Wentz also went down, according to USA Today and Newsday. Fox News framed McCarthy's demotion as a surprising decision by the team. It did not factor into Sunday's outcome since Wentz never left the field.

Murray's path back to the field runs through the NFL's mandated concussion protocol. USA Today reported he is scheduled for a follow-up evaluation Monday, followed by a five-step return-to-play process overseen by independent physicians, with no set timetable for clearance. A report carried by Ground News noted that under NFL rules, a player diagnosed with a concussion must wait a minimum of five days before returning to game action.

WFMD noted that first-time concussions typically sideline players for roughly two weeks, though recoveries of one week to three weeks are not uncommon. Whether Murray, an eighth-year veteran who spent his first seven seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, clears protocol in time for Minnesota's next game remains unresolved. Wentz, who according to USA Today has a 49-49-1 career record across 99 starts with the Vikings, Philadelphia Eagles, Indianapolis Colts, Washington Commanders, Los Angeles Rams and Kansas City Chiefs, is set to remain QB1 until Murray is cleared or the team says otherwise.
