India Sweeps All Three Compound Archery Golds at 2026 Asian Games, Locks In Early LA28 Olympic Quota

India's compound archers went a perfect three-for-three at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Wednesday, September 30, sweeping the women's, men's and mixed team golds in a single day, according to PTI reporting carried by The Federal. The mixed team result did something the 2023 Hangzhou sweep couldn't: it locked in an early quota spot for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where compound archery will make its Olympic debut.

The Sweep, Event by Event

The women's trio of Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Chikitha Taniparthi and Prithika Pradeep opened the gold rush, according to NDTV. India beat South Korea 234-233 in the semifinal, then beat China 238-234 in the final, matching South Korea's existing world record score in the process, NDTV reported.

The men's team of Kushal Dalal, Sahil Jadhav and Ganesh Mani Ratnam Thirumuru followed with a win over China in the final, described by The Federal as ranging from domineering to gritty across the day's three finals.

The headline result was the mixed team final. Chikitha Taniparthi and Sahil Jadhav needed a shoot-off to beat South Korea's Park Jungyoon and Choi Yonghee after regulation scores finished tied at 157-157, according to Hindustan Times and Times of India. In the shoot-off, Chikitha and Jadhav both hit 10s; Choi needed a 10 to keep Korea alive and managed only a nine, handing India the gold 20-19, Times of India reported.

Why the Mixed Result Mattered More

The win did double duty. Beyond the medal, it secured India's quota place for LA 2028, making India the first country to qualify for the Olympics in the compound mixed team event, according to The Federal and Times of India.

"I like both (the gold and the Olympic quota). It is my first Olympics, and I guess we are the first Indian team to qualify," Chikitha told IANS, as reported by The Hawk. "I was trying to be calm and confident," she added.

Hindustan Times detailed how close the final actually was. South Korea had shot a world-record 160 in eliminations and 159 in their semifinal against China, signaling intent, per Hindustan Times. India, by contrast, needed a one-point win over Thailand just to reach the final, 156-155, after nearly blowing a lead down the stretch. Dave Cousins, the American 1999 and 2003 world champion brought on as India's chief compound coach earlier this year, reacted to the final shoot-off by putting his hand on his chest and mouthing "Oh My God" toward his Korean counterpart, Hindustan Times reported.

India swept all five compound golds available at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, so a clean sweep alone wasn't new. What made Wednesday different was the Olympic quota riding on the mixed event, according to Hindustan Times.

Elsewhere on Day 11

Archery wasn't the only Indian story on the day, according to NDTV's live coverage. Neeru Dhanda and Kynan Chenai won gold in trap mixed team shooting, setting an Asian record and edging Qatar by a single point after dropping targets early, marking Dhanda's second gold in as many days.

In boxing, Priya Ghanghas took bronze in the 60kg division after a split-decision semifinal loss, while Lovlina Borgohain guaranteed at least a silver by winning a 3-2 decision over Natalya Bogdanova to reach the 75kg final.

India's women's squash team beat Singapore 2-0, with Tanvi Khanna and Anahat Singh securing at least a bronze by reaching the semifinals. Judoka Asmita Dey fell short in her bronze medal repechage bout in the 48kg category.

Wrestling brought mixed results. Nisha lost her round-of-16 bout to North Korea's Sol Gum Pak in the women's freestyle 68kg, then lost her repechage bronze-medal match to South Korea's Park Hyeonyeong. Sushil Kumar reached the men's 87kg Greco-Roman semifinals but was beaten by Japan's Taizo Yoshida, ending his run short of the final.

In cycling, Keerthy Rangaswamy Chikka advanced to the women's Keirin semifinals via repechage while Sarita Kumari was eliminated; in the men's sprint, Ronaldo Singh and David Beckham finished 15th and 14th in qualification before being eliminated in the round-of-16 repechages. India's sepaktakraw teams split their day, losing 0-2 to Vietnam in the women's quadrant and beating Laos 2-0 in the men's.
