Gotham FC's Emily Sonnett Out for Season After Knee Surgery, World Cup Status Uncertain

Gotham FC confirmed Friday, July 31, that defender Emily Sonnett underwent surgery to repair a ruptured patellar tendon in her left knee and will miss the remainder of the 2026 NWSL season.

The injury happened in the 11th minute of Gotham's 2-2 draw against the Portland Thorns at Providence Park on Friday, July 24. Sonnett was carted off on a stretcher and replaced by veteran defender Mandy Freeman, according to Equalizer Soccer.

"Emily has the full support of everyone at the club, and we will be with her every step of the way throughout her recovery," Gotham president of soccer operations Yael Averbuch West said in a statement. "She is incredibly resilient, and we know we will return stronger."

Gotham did not release a projected recovery timeline. The New York Post reported that recovery from this type of surgery typically runs six to 12 months, a window that puts real doubt over Sonnett's availability for the 2027 Women's World Cup, which kicks off next June in Brazil, as noted by WMBD radio (Field Level Media).

A Blow to the Defending Champions

Sonnett has anchored Gotham's backline since joining the club ahead of the 2024 season. She helped the team win the 2025 NWSL Championship, the 2025 Concacaf W Champions Cup, and the 2026 NWSL Challenge Cup.

Gotham currently sits second in the NWSL standings behind the Washington Spirit. The two clubs are tied for fewest goals allowed this season with 12, according to the Post. Sonnett's presence has been crucial to that defensive record.

The No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NWSL Draft, Sonnett is in her 10th league season. She has made 180 career appearances (174 starts) across stops with the Portland Thorns (2016-19), Washington Spirit (2021-22), Seattle Reign (2023) and Gotham (2024-present), tallying six goals and four assists, per Field Level Media. She's a three-time NWSL champion, having also won titles with Portland in 2017 and Washington in 2021.

International Résumé on the Line

Sonnett, 33, has 118 caps for the U.S. women's national team. She was part of the 2019 World Cup-winning squad, won Olympic gold in 2024 and bronze in 2020, and has claimed two Concacaf Women's Championships, a Concacaf W Gold Cup, and eight SheBelieves Cups, according to Equalizer Soccer. She reached her 100th cap for the national team in 2024.

With the World Cup less than 11 months away, U.S. head coach Emma Hayes now has one fewer proven veteran option at center back. A six-to-12-month recovery window means Sonnett's return to full match fitness could land right around World Cup roster deadlines, not comfortably ahead of them.

None of the three reports offer a firm surgery date beyond the announcement itself or a specific target return month, and Gotham has not said whether it will pursue a replacement signing before the NWSL trade deadline. The club's playoff push and the national team's center-back depth chart heading into 2027 roster planning both remain in flux.
