Giants Sign Tight End Tyler Moore, DT Marlon Davidson Before Camp Opens

The New York Giants brought in 18 players for a tryout and walked away signing two of them, according to the New York Post. Tight end Tyler Moore and defensive tackle Marlon Davidson are expected to join the team as it opens training camp at its facility in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Neither name will move the needle for a fan base focused on bigger questions about this roster. This is the unglamorous roster churn every NFL team does in the days before camp, filling out numbers and testing depth.

Moore is an undrafted rookie out of Iowa State. Over four college seasons he caught 21 passes for 245 yards and two touchdowns, according to the Post. That's modest college production for a tight end, putting him firmly in long-shot territory to make the 53-man roster. Camp bodies at tight end matter anyway. Teams need enough healthy players at every position to survive padded practices without disaster.

Davidson is the more established name. He's 28 years old and has appeared in 25 career games since the Atlanta Falcons took him in the second round of the 2020 draft. His workload has thinned out significantly since then. He played in just one game for the Houston Texans last season, according to the Post.

Davidson effectively replaces defensive tackle C.J. Ravenell, who the Giants waived last week with a non-football injury designation, per the Post. A non-football injury designation means the injury didn't occur during team activities, which matters for insurance and roster mechanics purposes but is otherwise a routine roster transaction.

The tryout brought in some more recognizable names who did not sign, at least as of the Post's report. Kenneth Murray, a former first-round pick out of Oklahoma who has played for the Chargers, Titans and Cowboys, worked out for the Giants. So did quarterback Jake Haener, a 2023 fourth-round pick who appeared in eight games with one start for the New Orleans Saints in 2024, including one appearance against the Giants themselves. Defensive tackle Foley Fatukasi also took part.

None of those three were reported as signing. Tryouts like this are common league-wide in the days before camp opens. Teams use them to build a scouting file on players they might need to call later in the season when injuries hit, even if there's no roster spot available right now.

This is not a franchise-altering set of moves. It's roster maintenance. The Giants aren't adding a starter or a name that changes their outlook for the 2026 season. A front office actively managing numbers heading into camp uses tryouts to find value at the margins rather than sitting on an open roster spot.
