Ex-Auburn Recruiting Staffer Arrested, Accused of Leaking Prospect Files to 11 Rival Schools Under Alias 'Don Julio'

David Rudolph Jenrath turned himself in to Auburn police on Monday, September 28, and was booked into the Lee County Jail on $15,000 bond, according to Football Scoop. The 24-year-old faces two felony charges: theft of trade secrets and computer tampering.

Auburn police say the case traces back to July 19, when a report came in from the 300 block of South Donahue Drive, the address of the Auburn Athletics Department, according to Essentially Sports. A department statement said a "business reported that sensitive information was stolen from the business and distributed to their competitors." One of the schools that received the material turned it back over to Auburn, which is what triggered the investigation, according to CBS Sports and Football Scoop.

Jenrath worked at Auburn from January through June 2026 as a player personnel scouting assistant under first-year head coach Alex Golesh, focused on evaluating running backs and special teams, according to his now-deleted LinkedIn profile cited by multiple outlets. He was fired in the spring after calling out sick and then being spotted in the student section at Auburn baseball's Super Regional, On3's Justin Hokanson told The Next Round.

What Was Actually Leaked

Using the alias "Don Julio," Jenrath allegedly sent roughly 10 documents to as many as 11 competing programs, according to CBS Sports. The material included Auburn's evaluations of high school and transfer prospects targeted for the 2027, 2028 and 2029 recruiting classes, plus the names, phone numbers and emails of Auburn recruiting staff and a breakdown of the school's internal grading system, which ranks recruits from "no-brainers" down to "rejects."

CBS Sports reported the documents did not include game-plan information, and Sporting News and Essentially Sports both confirmed no NIL spending or revenue-sharing data was part of the leak. One email's subject line reportedly included Golesh's home address, according to CBS Sports, though no source has explained why.

Charging documents accuse Jenrath of disclosing Auburn's trade secrets "with the intent to harass Auburn University Athletics," per Football Scoop's review of the police paperwork.

The Case Against the Case

Not everyone thinks the felony charges match the conduct. bcsnn, citing ESPN sourcing, reported that one SEC front-office staffer who received the "Don Julio" email assumed it was "just recruiting spam" and didn't recognize it as confidential. The same report noted Jenrath wasn't a full-time athletic department employee, and quoted a source who received the documents questioning how proprietary the information really was: "Your high school slash JUCO evaluation pipeline and how it gets from the intern to the head coach is not confidential information," the source told CBS Sports.

Recruiting boards and scouting notes circulate informally across college football all the time, and prosecutors have not publicly detailed evidence tying Jenrath's actions to a genuine trade-secret harm, as opposed to an ex-employee venting after getting fired.

But the charging documents allege something more specific than a leaked spreadsheet. They describe a deliberate scheme to harass Auburn's athletics department, executed under a fake identity, that included the head coach's home address in an email subject line. Prosecutors clearly believe intent matters here, not just the sensitivity of the underlying data. Whether a jury or judge ultimately agrees that recruiting evaluations rise to the legal standard of a "trade secret" is an open question the courts, not sports reporters, will have to answer.

Essentially Sports, citing USA Today, reported that Auburn's Controller's Office shows five payments to Jenrath totaling $535 between September and December 2025, during Hugh Freeze's final season as head coach, before Golesh's staff retained him in January 2026. No source has established any connection between those payments and the alleged leak.

Auburn has declined comment through an athletic department spokesperson, according to Football Scoop.
