Barcelona Score 33 Goals in Seven Straight Wins to Open Best Start in Club History

FC Barcelona has never opened a season like this. Seven matches, seven wins, 33 goals scored, seven conceded.

The latest came Tuesday at Spotify Camp Nou, a 7-2 thrashing of Racing Santander that broke the club's own record for best start to a campaign, according to FC Barcelona's official match report.

Captain Raphinha scored a hat-trick, converting two penalties and adding a third from open play in the 25th, 42nd and 67th minutes. João Cancelo opened the scoring in the eighth minute, Racing's Asier Villalibre put through his own net in the 36th, and second-half substitute Gabriel Jesus scored his first goal in Barcelona colors in the 79th minute, according to VAVEL's live match coverage. Lamine Yamal closed it out in the 89th minute off a pass from fellow substitute Karim Adeyemi.

Racing answered with goals from Yassir Zabiri and one other, but the result was never in doubt.

A record that stretches back to 1929

Barcelona's perfect run through seven matches is unprecedented for the club. Before this season, the best start on record was six wins from six matches, achieved in 1929-30, 1960-61 and 2018-19, according to FC Barcelona's own recap. None of those three teams carried a perfect record into a seventh game. This year's squad did, and won.

The season opened with a 5-0 win at Elche, followed by a 2-0 win over Athletic Club, a 5-2 win over Rayo Vallecano, a 5-0 win over Valencia, a 5-1 win over Feyenoord, a 4-2 win over Levante, and now the 7-2 win over Racing Santander. Add it up and Barcelona have scored 33 goals while allowing seven, per the club's figures.

The scoring has not been dependent on one player. Raphinha and Yamal have carried most of the attacking load, but summer arrivals Adeyemi and Gabriel Jesus have already contributed goals off the bench, giving manager Hansi Flick attacking depth he did not have when he took over the club in 2024.

The historical warning sign

Barcelona have been this hot before, and it didn't always end well.

After Barcelona's four-match haul of 17 goals earlier this month, Mundo Deportivo noted, as reported by Yahoo Sports, that only two Barcelona teams had ever scored more in their first four league matches: the 1949-50 side, which scored 19, and the 1950-51 side, which scored 21. Neither won the league title that year. The 1949-50 team beat Nastic de Tarragona 10-1 and Sevilla 7-0, then turned around and lost 6-1 to Real Madrid and 3-1 to Athletic Club, per that same reporting.

Barcelona have also matched the 17-goal mark from Domingo Balmanya's 1957-58 squad and Pep Guardiola's 2011-12 squad. Real Madrid won the league both of those seasons instead.

That history doesn't mean this year's team will collapse. A blistering scoring start hasn't historically guaranteed a title for Barcelona, and results in October, November and beyond will matter more than the September highlight reel.

Barcelona sit atop La Liga on a perfect record and will look to extend the streak to eight on Saturday, traveling to face Sevilla at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium, according to FC Barcelona's official schedule. A win there would push the club further into territory it has never occupied before. A loss would put the historical pattern back in play, and give critics of the early-season hype something concrete to point to.
