Android Verifies Phone Numbers Across Every Signed-In Google Account by Default, and Users Are Only Now Noticing

Android Verifies Phone Numbers Across Every Signed-In Google Account by Default, and Users Are Only Now Noticing
Google's Android software has automatically attached a phone's SIM number to every Google account signed in on the device, a default documented since fall 2025. Users began noticing in mid-October 2026 after unprompted verification emails arrived. Google has not said whether numbers added this way feed its ad settings.

Google's documentation has said since fall 2025 that Android verifies a phone's number automatically and adds it to every Google account signed in on the device. In mid-October 2026, plenty of users learned this the hard way, through emails they never asked for.

The messages come from noreply-phone-verification@google.com and say a phone number has been verified. Reddit user Nanosinx flagged them in the r/Android subreddit. Android Authority picked up the story on Oct. 14, and SlashGear followed on Oct. 21.

What Google's setup does

Google Play services verifies the number during device setup. Google's support page says the number is then added to "all Google Accounts that are signed in on the device." That covers current and future accounts alike.

The practical effect: a work account, a secondary profile, or a throwaway account added later picks up every number on the phone. Swap in a new SIM and the new number goes onto every account too.

Google and carriers also re-verify numbers periodically. Engadget notes that can incur carrier charges. The setting can only be managed from the phone itself.

The timeline

Android Authority found that Google's support documentation was amended sometime between August and October 2025 to make verification on by default. A Google Play services changelog dated Sept. 8, 2025 lists number verification as running automatically on setup.

A month later, in October 2025, Google introduced Sign in with Mobile Number. That Android recovery tool identifies the Google accounts tied to a phone number and lets the owner back in with the lock-screen passcode from a previous device.

So this is not a new rollout. The default has been in place for more than a year. What changed is that the confirmation emails started landing and people started reading the fine print.

Google's stated rationale

Google's support page says verification enables a list of features: account recovery, RCS messaging, video calls, emergency location services, finding a lost device, phone number sign-in, and Quick Share. Turning verification on also enables "Better sharing on Google" for one of the signed-in accounts, which Google says supports video calls, messages and notifications for content sent to the number, such as photos.

That is the company's case: a verified number makes recovery and messaging work. Google has not explained why the number must be attached to every account on the phone rather than one.

Why users are angry

The complaint is about consent and separation. People who keep a work profile, a personal account and a disposable one on the same phone often do so on purpose. Android Authority and Android Central both point to the obvious problem for anyone who deliberately keeps a primary SIM apart from secondary accounts.

TechRadar's take was that the feature "should obviously be an opt-in feature, as it always used to be." In a reader poll on Android Authority's article, 86% of 2,441 respondents said the setup decreases their trust in Google. That is an unscientific poll, but it shows the mood.

There is also an ad question Google hasn't answered. Its help pages describe a "Better ads & Google services" setting that uses a phone number across Google services to show more relevant ads. Google's page says any verified number on an Android device can be added to any Google account signed into it. It has not said which ads setting governs numbers attached automatically, according to Engadget's reading of the documentation.

Reports of the setting reverting

Some users on Reddit say the auto-verification toggle switches itself back on after being turned off. Others report seeing the behavior on GrapheneOS when Google Play services are installed. These are user reports. Google has not confirmed either.

As of Oct. 21, Google had not publicly addressed the reports or said whether it would change the verification process.

How to turn it off

On most Android phones, open Settings, then Google (or Google services and preferences), then All services. Under Privacy & security, select Phone number verification and switch off "Verify phone numbers automatically." Menu labels vary by device.

Turning it off is not retroactive. Numbers already attached stay put. To remove them, open each Google account's Personal info page, go to Phone, and delete the number. That has to be done account by account.

Malwarebytes advises also checking the Usage section on the Phone page and your Security & sign-in settings. A number added for two-step verification or an app like Google Pay won't disappear just because it is deleted from the Phone page. Those settings need separate updates.

The open question is whether Google will say how these auto-attached numbers interact with its ad personalization controls, and whether it will move the default to opt-in. So far it has done neither.
