Alabama's Keelon Russell, five starts in, faces No. 2 Georgia on Saturday

Alabama's Keelon Russell, five starts in, faces No. 2 Georgia on Saturday
Keelon Russell has 1,414 passing yards, 11 touchdowns and two interceptions through five starts for undefeated Alabama. Saturday night he faces a Georgia defense that has held its last three SEC opponents to 44 combined points. Georgia has not won at Bryant-Denny Stadium since 2007.

Alabama's quarterback has five college starts. On Saturday, Oct. 10, he gets the best defense in the country.

Keelon Russell and the No. 6 Crimson Tide (5-0) host No. 2 Georgia (5-0) at Bryant-Denny Stadium. ESPN's College GameDay is set to broadcast from Tuscaloosa. The winner could take the top spot in the AP poll on Sunday.

The numbers so far

Russell has completed 71.2% of his passes for 1,414 yards, 11 touchdowns and two interceptions. He has added 184 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns. His 185.6 passer rating is seventh nationally.

Over his last three games he has thrown for 970 yards and 10 touchdowns with no interceptions, and he has a rushing touchdown in each of those games.

Alabama is averaging 49.6 points and 474 yards per game, and it has scored at least 45 in every contest. Only Georgia scores more, at 51.4 per game. Alabama just beat Mississippi State 56-23 on Oct. 3.

A starter since late August

Russell was the consensus five-star and the No. 2 overall prospect in the 2025 class, per 247Sports. He picked Alabama over Florida, SMU, Ole Miss and Oregon.

He played in just two games last season behind Ty Simpson, who became a first-round NFL draft pick. This summer he beat out 6-foot-6 senior Austin Mack in camp. Head coach Kalen DeBoer did not name him the starter until late August.

His first start was not smooth. At Kentucky in Week 2, he threw a pick-six on the opening drive, and Alabama fumbled on its second. The Tide trailed by four at halftime, then won the second half 32-0.

"The best thing is, the things that don't go perfect, he learned from them," DeBoer said. "You don't see those things show up the next game."

Asked this week why he is confident in Russell, DeBoer said the quarterback "continues to stay calm, cool and consistent." He added: "He's on top of every little detail of the game plan, and that's what it takes in games like this where those details matter."

What Georgia brings

Georgia beat Arkansas, Oklahoma and Vanderbilt by at least 24 points each. Those three opponents scored 44 combined.

The Bulldogs have 13 sacks, eight interceptions and two defensive touchdowns in five games. Defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann is a former Alabama assistant.

DeBoer called this "their greatest test by far" for his offense.

Georgia coach Kirby Smart was not stingy with praise. "I knew he was an elite player, probably the best quarterback in the country coming out," Smart said of Russell. "Then he kind of goes away and disappears for a year and reappears."

Smart described a quarterback who is more than a runner. "He doesn't run unless he has to, and he can. He scrambles to throw, scrambles to run. He's accurate and smart."

He also called the Tide's scheme around Russell "really good."

The skeptic's case

Not everyone is sold yet. Newsweek's framing is that a win over Smart's Bulldogs would leave "no choice" but to take Alabama seriously. All five Alabama wins have come by double digits, but none has come against a defense like this one.

ESPN's Rece Davis, speaking on "The Pat McAfee Show" Tuesday, said Russell living up to the hype "has created some energy in the fanbase."

Georgia's own history in this building is part of the picture. The Bulldogs have not won at Bryant-Denny Stadium since 2007. DeBoer's teams are 16-1 there, including 8-1 in conference play.

What decides it

The Tide have scored at least 14 points in seven of their last eight quarters. Georgia's pass rush and secondary have produced 21 sacks and interceptions combined. One of those units gives first.

Russell's two interceptions this season came in his first two starts. Georgia has eight picks of its own. Whether the quarterback who has been clean for three straight games stays that way against this defense is the central question of the night.

Kickoff is Saturday night in Tuscaloosa. The AP poll comes out Sunday.
