Education Week published a frank opinion piece by Larry Ferlazzo on May 13, 2026. His take: for mainstream English-proficient students, AI provides ZERO real learning benefit. A veteran teacher of over two decades is looking at the entire AI-in-education debate and saying the emperor has no clothes — at least for the average student.
But Ferlazzo carves out a clear exception. For English learners, he says AI tools are genuinely valuable. Real-time translation, speaking practice at home where no other English speakers exist, simultaneous translation tools for students dropped into English-only classrooms. That's a concrete, defensible use case.
Irina McGrath, Ph.D., assistant principal at Newcomer Academy in Jefferson County public schools, goes further — arguing AI literacy itself needs to be the curriculum goal, not just a classroom tool.
Two educators. Two different frameworks. Both published in the same week.
The Debate Over Who Benefits
The argument isn't really about AI being good or bad. It's about who it helps and when.
Common Sense Education's Christine Elgersma, writing March 11, 2026, laid out the real spectrum — from adaptive learning algorithms that have existed quietly in edtech for years, to generative AI that writes entire essays on demand. Those are not the same thing, and treating them as one issue has muddied every school board meeting and policy memo for three years running.
The Learning.com team, writing in 2024, made the case for AI as a scalable personal tutor — filling gaps that teachers simply don't have bandwidth to fill in K-12 classrooms. Teacher shortages are real. Class sizes are real. Dismissing AI as a tutoring supplement because it can also write a kid's essay misses the point.
What Schools Are Actually Doing: Not Much
Policies are still described, across every one of these sources, as "evolving" or "experimental." Schools are still developing their approach.
Three years after ChatGPT became a household name. Three years after teachers started finding AI-written essays in their grading stacks. And the institutional response remains under construction.
The first class fully shaped by this technology just graduated. They didn't wait for a policy framework. They adapted, they used it, some learned and some didn't, and now they're competing for jobs against people who also used it. The adults arguing about acceptable use policies in committee meetings were playing catch-up.
What Mainstream Media Is Getting Wrong
Left-leaning outlets like the New York Times tend to frame this as a generational story — nostalgic, humanizing, focused on what students "missed out on" or how they "navigated" the change. Heavy on personal narrative, light on outcome data.
The trade and educator publications are more granular but often buried in practitioner jargon. Nobody is asking the hardest question directly: Are students who used AI heavily actually less capable than those who didn't? Ferlazzo gestures at it, but the research isn't comprehensive yet. Or if it is, nobody is citing it.
The Actual Split
AI as a replacement for thinking — bad. Produces students who can't write, can't reason, can't do the job when the tool isn't available.
AI as a scaffold for students who are behind — potentially valuable. English learners, students with learning differences, kids without tutoring resources at home. These are real gaps, and the tool addresses them.
Every school that hasn't made that distinction in writing by now is failing its students. Not the AI's fault. The adults' fault.
What It Means for Regular People
If you have a kid in school right now, the question isn't whether they're using AI. They are. The question is whether anyone is teaching them when to trust it and when it's making them weaker.
If you're hiring that first ChatGPT-raised graduating class, you're about to find out fast which schools figured this out and which ones didn't. The difference won't show up on a resume.
